Hartford Courant Media Group enjoys a unique position in the news and advertising worlds. Hartford Courant Media Group puts the power of integration into the hands of its advertisers by offering a portfolio of targeted products, customized solutions, integrated strategies and quality audiences that grow its clients’ businesses.
The business includes the heritage of The Courant, “the oldest continuously published newspaper in America,” and the most technologically advanced TV news production facilities in the industry. Integration is at the core of Hartford Courant Media Group’s operations and content gathering while its brands exist independently to serve their respective audiences.
The Courant, founded as a weekly on October 29, 1764, adopted the slogan, “Older than the nation,” and has never missed publication since its inception. The newspaper was honored with two Pulitzer prizes, one in 1992 for an investigation into the problems with the Hubble Space Telescope and another in 1999 in the Breaking News category for coverage of a 1998 multiple murder-suicide at Connecticut Lottery headquarters. Times Mirror purchased The Courant, which was employee-owned, in 1979, and the paper was sold again when Times Mirror merged with the Tribune Company in 2000.
The Advocate Weekly Newspapers were linked to The Courant even before the newspaper bought the weeklies in 1999. Geoffrey Robinson and Edward Matys founded the company in 1973 when they were copy editors at The Courant. In 1973 they introduced the Hartford Advocate and the Valley Advocate, based in Amherst, Mass. The New Haven Advocate and the Fairfield County Advocate followed in 1975 and 1978, respectively. The Advocate weeklies are a mix of investigative journalism, political coverage and arts features and criticism, mostly from a liberal or countercultural point of view.
Hartford Courant Media Group expanded it’s portfolio of products in 2014 by aquiring the largest weekly newspaper in Connecticut, ReminderNews. ReminderNews reaches over 300,000 readers weekly. Providing strong hyper-local news content to the communities through 15 editions. ReminderNews is the community choice.
